Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Brigham Young pounded out 19 hits and got a solid pitching performance by Matthew Neil as it defeated San Diego State, 9-3, to capture the final game of their three-game conference series at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Even with the loss, the Aztecs maintained their slim hold on fourth place in the Mountain West Conference standings by percentage points over BYU and UNLV.

SDSU freshman left-hander Mitch Bluman struggled from the outset in his third start of the season as he escaped runners on third base in each of the first two innings. He was not as fortunate in the third when the Cougars got to him for a pair of runs on a walk and three hits for a 2-0 lead.

One of those hits was recorded by BYU right fielder Jaycob Brugman, who tortured the Aztecs all afternoon. Brugman would end his day with four hits including the double along with a two-run homer and four RBI.

Brigham Young starter Matthew Neil held the Aztec hitless over the first four innings, but they did manage answer BYU's two-run outburst by scoring a run in bottom of the third. Dillon Bryant's grounder was misplayed by BYU first baseman Austin Hall for a two-base error. A ground out by Evan Potter moved Bryant to third and sacrifice fly by Cody Smith made it a 2-1 game.

But the visitors took control of the contest with four runs in the next frame, a rally that began with a leadoff triple by Bret Lopez and ended with Brugman's two-run blast to right. The Cougars would touch up Aztec pitching on the day for a hit total that included five doubles along with the triple and home run.

Freshman DH Ben Vasko did his part to get SDSU back into the contest with a solo home run, his second of the season, to lead off the fifth. He was the lone Aztec to reach base more than once in the game as he also drew a walk and was hit by pitch.

San Diego State's other run came in the bottom of the seventh when it put men on first and second on a single by Jomel Torres and hit by pitch to Vasko. A wild pitch moved both runners up before a grounder to short by Tim Zier brought Torres home for the final 9-3 score.

Neil's day ended after that inning and he would be credited with the win to improve to 5-4. His line included three runs (two earned) on two hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. SDSU's Bluman took the loss to fall to 0-1 although he gave up just a pair of runs with three strikeouts during his 2.1 innings.

Up next for San Diego State is a three-game conference series at UNLV next weekend to conclude the 2011 regular season. The first contest of that set is scheduled for Thursday, May 18, at 7:00 p.m. at Earl Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas.

Samuel trust's director Andrew Kroger resigns - The Australian

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

COMPETITION tsar Graeme Samuel's blind trust has again been restructured, following the resignation of former stockbroker Andrew Kroger as sole director of the trust companies.

Mr Kroger, who is often overseas, stepped down as a director of Lyngrae and Samfa, part of the structure that holds Mr Samuel's 25 per cent interest in the old DFO holding company Austexx.

He declined to comment when contacted by the Australian.

The new director of Lyngrae and Samfa is Peter Still, who, among other things, is listed in ASIC records as the principal executive officer of the Canned Fruits Industry Council of Australia from 1991-95.

Mr Still could not be reached for comment.

As DFO's predicament has worsened, Lyngrae and Samfa company officers have been turned over a number of times.

Last August, with the discount shopping centre empire on the brink, Mr Samuel publicly lamented the loss of his family fortune, saying it was "distressing indeed" for his children and grandchildren as beneficiaries of his estate.

The month before, in July, Austexx chief executive Geoff Porz stepped down as a director of the trust companies.

Ex-ACTU boss Bill Kelty followed him out the door days later.

Packer family confidant Guy Jalland came in as a director in July, only to resign last October, leaving Mr Kroger as the sole director.

As trustees, however, Mr Jalland and Mr Kroger represented Mr Samuel's interests in protracted workout negotiations of the DFO South Wharf project in Melbourne's Docklands precinct.

They were able to negotiate a $5 million benefit for Mr Samuel in return for allowing Austexx to take on more debt to complete South Wharf.

The negotiations culminated in the $498m sale of four DFO centres, including South Wharf, to CFS Retail Property Trust in September.

While the transaction settled last December, the $5m is understood to be still sitting in a law firm's trust account.

Disbursement of the money, as well as further funds, won't occur until all parties have agreed.

Mr Samuel is due to step down as chairman of the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission at the end of July, to be replaced by Rod Sims.

He remains embroiled in a Victorian Supreme Court case, where lenders are seeking to recover $7.7m in unpaid interest under personal guarantees signed by his business partners, David Golberger and David Wieland.

They have joined Mr Samuel as a defendant, seeking to rely on an indemnity provided by the ACCC chief if the court enforces their personal guarantees.

Mr Samuel is defending the proceedings, while Mr Goldberger and Mr Wieland are resisting the lenders' move to enforce the guarantees.

Harold Camping Describes How May 21 Judgment Day Will Unfold - HULIQ

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

Harold Camping is the 89-year-old founder of Family Radio, but he is also the man who prophesized that May 21 would be the exact date of the Rapture, or Judgment Day, based on clues he says are written throughout the Bible, and in a recent interview, he said still more about his confidence.

You've probably seen the signs and billboards stating May 21 will be the end of the world. Some of his follwers have become so convinced of the date, that they have spent all their savings. After all, they will have no more need for savings after May 21, will they?

In the interview, published in New York magazine, Harold Camping said he is absolutely 100 percent positive that May 21 will be Judgment Day. He said that there's nothing in the Bible that has ever been prophesized by God that has not happened. Thus, he's sure that May 21 will be the date, although he didn't give details as to what exact information in the bible gave him the date.

When asked about his earlier prediction, one which gave the year 1994 as an earlier Day of Reckoning, he said his information also gave him 2011 as a possibility. He said that he hadn't completed his study of the Bible at that time, and that is why, given the possibilities, that he wrote the book 1994?, including a question mark in the title to make sure it was clear that the date was in question. In the book, he said, he also indicated that 2011 was also a good possibility for the End of Days.

Parts of the world will have plenty of warning that the end is nigh. The reason is that, accoding to Harold Camping's prediction, when May 21 is reached, at "about" (his word) 6 p.m., there will be a huge earthquake "that?s going to make the last earthquake in Japan seem like nothing in comparison." Thus, other parts of the globe will see the end come as the clock ticks to 6 p.m. Assuming it happens first in the parts of the world that the sun rises first in, the rest of the world will see it coming.

Harold Camping is not the slightest bit worried that it won't happen. He's 100 percent certain, and when asked about any doubts, he says, "It?s going to happen. It?s going to happen. I don?t even think about those kind of issues. The Bible is not ? God is not playing games. I don?t even want to think about that question at all. It is going to happen."

As far as if he has begun thinking of possible responses to followers if the Rapture doesn't happen (and we note that should occur early Friday morning in the Pacific Time Zone in the U.S., if the first quakes don't occur), he said that he hasn't thought of that at all, because it's going to happen.

Of course, plenty of others have predicted dates for the end of the world. The last such to gain major publicity was the one supposedly prophesized by the Mayan Calendar. Ironically, that too is a 21: Dec. 21, 2012.

Next stop Baku: Azerbaijan wins Eurovision

DUESSELDORF, Germany ? Azerbaijan scored a spectacular first-ever victory in the 56th Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday, Europe's annual pop extravaganza watched by tens of millions of people.

In Duesseldorf, Germany, Azerbaijani duo Ell and Nikki and their love song "Running Scared" was voted the best of the 25 finalists by voters and "expert" juries in 43 countries in Europe and beyond.

It was only the fourth time that Azerbaijan has competed. Second was Italy, and Sweden came third. Switzerland came last.

"Thank you, we love you," said Ell, real name Eldar Gasimov. "Thanks to God and to my grandad... Our dream came true."

"From the first day I believed we could do it... The world needs more true love."

"I can hardly imagine how people are feeling back home today," said Nikki, 20, whose full name is Nigar Jamal, and who lives in London -- and has an accent to prove it.

They saw off strong competition from Germany's Lena, who was hoping to become the first person in Eurovision's long history to win two years running, Irish twins Jedward and French tenor Amaury Vassili, the bookies' favourite.

A number from Zdob si Zbub, a difficult-to-pronounce group of lively Moldovans in "cosmic" pointy hats was also a strong contender, as were songs by Sjonni's Friends from Iceland and from Italian crooner Raphael Gualazzi.

Often cringe-worthy but always watchable, Eurovision is a cherished institution, with 43 nations -- including some from outside Europe -- competing, then whittled down to 25 for the grand final.

"It's amazing. This competition brings Europe together and brings countries together. This is what I went into music for," said Lee Ryan, 27, a member of this year's British entry, newly reformed boy band Blue.

Despite Europe's linguistic diversity, "Running Scared" was the 23rd song sung in English to win. French songs have won 14 times, Dutch and Hebrew songs three times each. Norway's 2011 entry was partly in Swahili.

The TV show, one of the world's longest-running, is now broadcast not only in Europe, but also in Australia, Canada, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Jordan, Korea, New Zealand and the United States, even though they do not participate.

Eurovision tradition dictates that Azerbaijan's victory means that the 2012 competition will be held the resource-rich former Soviet republic often criticised by campaign groups for having a poor human rights record.

Earlier this month, a young opposition activist was jailed for two and half years on drugs charges in Azerbaijan after using social networking website Facebook to call for an uprising like those in the Arab world.

Jabbar Savalan, 20, was the first activist to be imprisoned since government opponents began a series of thwarted protests this year in the mainly Muslim state which is an important supplier of oil and gas to the West.

Rights group Amnesty International said that the activist's imprisonment showed how far the authorities were willing to go to silence dissenting voices, saying the environment for freedom of expression was "fragile."

But the governing party of President Ilham Aliyev says that a discredited and unpopular opposition has been trying to stir up confrontation which could damage the country, and analysts believe that widespread political unrest is unlikely.

Baku 'one of the most beautiful cities in the world' - Ilham Aliyev - News.Az

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

'We?ll make additions to current state budget to do this work without delay', said President Ilham Aliyev.

President Ilham Aliyev continued his visits to inspect redevelopment work in Baku's suburban villages with a trip to Mardakan settlement in Khazar District of Baku on Thursday.

Baku Mayor Hajibala Abutalibov briefed the president on work done in the area, the presidential website reported.

The intra-roads have begun to be renovated as a first step in Mardakan settlement. The roads with an area of 16,500 square meters have been covered with new asphalt with an area of 19,000 square meters to be asphalted in future. It was noted that water and gas supply lines in Mardakan will be renovated. The state program envisages creating sanitation system here, too, alongside with other Baku suburban settlements.

The lightening system in the settlement is also expected to be renewed. It was noted that it is planned to overhaul secondary school No. 181, a nursery No. 91 and kindergarten No. 221, Joint Municipal Hospital No. 26 and Tuberculosis Sanatorium No. 2 and supply them with the state of the art equipment.

After viewing the work done, the head of the state met Mardakan residents.

President Ilham Aliyev said greeting the public members:

?As you know, a special program has been designed to develop suburban villages of Baku. The program will be approved at the beginning of this month and the work will be carried out at a fast pace soon. Certain part of the work has already begun. New roads are being laid to Mardakan. These will wide-ranging works. Infrastructure projects are planned to be implemented in all settlements.

The program has been published in the press and everyone can get familiar with it. Certain orders have been issued with regard to each settlement. As to Mardakan, school and kindergartens are expected to be repaired here. A hospital will be renovated, new roads will be laid and gas supply project will be realized. Water supply and sanitation projects will also be implemented.

So, all socioeconomic issues in each village should be tackled by the time the program is realized in 2013. As you know, I have examined the situation in several settlements and listened to wishes of residents. The program has already been approved. Of course, we all should control realization of this program.

I want works in all settlements to be conducted at a fast pace in short period of time so that all urgent issues are resolved. We are aware of these problems. Therefore, I considered it important to adopt a special state program on redevelopment of Baku and its suburbs and we did it. All state bodies have been instructed to step up efforts. The requests and wishes of local residents should also be taken into consideration.

We try to cover all issues by the new program. However, experience shows that sometimes it is possible to do this. Additions were also made to the State Program on Socioeconomic Development of Regions adopted in 2004 over time.

The same can happen with the current program. So, when additional proposals are made, they will also be considered. We did our best so that the program addresses all major infrastructure problems facing the people. The work is already underway. I am sure that all instructions will be fulfilled in time.?

RESIDENT: Mr. President. We are very happy to meet you in our settlement. This is one of the memorable moments. Your visit gives much enthusiasm. Our district and settlement becomes prettier every passing day. Much is being done both in the settlement and the entire district. We believe that our district will be much more beautiful like our country and Baku once the program is fully implemented. We are confident that our district will not lag behind other districts.

We appreciate your domestic and foreign policies. We will always support you. You policy convinces us that our republic has a great future.

There are a number of proposals at the moment. You already noted that the hospital should be repaired. The hospital No. 26 is the largest in our district. This is an old hospital reconstructed roughly in 1892. But many years have passed, and it does not meet modern requirements. We want the hospital to be included into the program, to be renovated so that our residents, veteran could receive good treatment there. We are grateful to you. Thank you very much.

President Ilham Aliyev: Thank you. The issue you mentioned will be settled. The complete overhaul of the hospital No. 26 and its supply with modern equipment will be included into the state program. I am sure that the works will begin soon. This hospital indeed has a great history. It used to be the central hospital of the district and nearby areas, but now it needs to be repaired at the high level. We will together open it after it is repaired. As to the works in the district, they are carried out in a proper manner. Khazar is a large and old district. Mardakan is a settlement with a long history. It has rich history and culture. I want works here to be conducted at a high level.

Now we also creating a grand entry into Mardakan and a beautiful bridge is being built. You are well aware that the cars stuck in traffic jams on Mardakan circle for several minutes, and maybe half an hour before. Although the distance to Mardakan has not reduced, now you can drive faster on this road as there are no circles. Beautiful bridges, overpasses have been built instead and the road has been enlarged. Now it is very convenient to enter the city from here.

Internal roads in Mardakan will also be renovated. You know very well that these roads are not wide enough. But the project of reconstruction of main streets is being developed and will be submitted soon. We will view it together in order to reconstruct this street for vehicles and pedestrians at a higher level. All these issues will be resolved. I just want them to be resolved quickly.

The program adopted is a great program. This is a project that requires a lot of work from both technical and financial standpoint. Large funds are needed to implement this program. We will make additions to the state budget this year to carry out this work without delay. However, despite this, the term of the program is only two and a half years. Why? Because I want these issues to be resolved quickly.

Of course, there must be a strong public control which will depend on you. Work is under way, roads, water lines will be built, gas lines will re-routed. We must make sure that they are of good quality, because public funds are allocated and work is underway. In some cases, the work done does not satisfy us because public control is weak. Executives are sometimes irresponsible about their work.

Therefore, public control has to be very strong. I ask all of you and inhabitants of all villages make sure to inform me if any issues are resolved in a wrong manner or there are any shortcomings. Now one can send a letter via e-mail, that is, information could be delivered in various ways. We must make sure that the work is done at a high level and wishes of the inhabitants are taken into account.

RESIDENT: Distinguished President, Khazar is a large district. This is one of the major parts of Absheron. We see your visit as a continuation of May holidays. On behalf of Mardakan residents, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for coming to our settlement.

Great work is being done in our district in accordance with your instructions. Sanitation is one of the issues facing us. The measures taken by you, the decrees issues and checking fulfillment of orders on the ground point to your care about the people.

I express my deep gratitude to you once again on behalf of entire Khazar District.

President Ilham Aliyev: Thank you. The questions you raised are very important. Unfortunately, sanitation issue is urgent not only in Mardakan, but also in all settlements. Sewerage lines were not laid in previous times. This requires hard work and large financial sources. But this program has already started to be implemented. All appropriate instructions have been given. Azersu Joint Stock Company is dealing with this issue. We will try to build sanitation and water lines in all residential areas in the country. This is very complicated and big work as there were no lines previously. They must be re-routed, pipes must be laid and modern cleaning equipment must be installed. This issue is our priority in Baku suburbs. I know that people are mostly concerned about drinking water and sanitation. We faced shortage of electricity at one time. This issue was eventually solved. Now there is no such problem.

The gas supply works are done rapidly. Certain work has already been done and all gas supply projects across the country will be realized. All settlements will be supplied with gas.

Today Azerbaijan?s realities are acknowledged and studied by other countries. Our experience and redevelopment work draws attention.

Baku is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. This is true. Foreign guests who trip to Baku also acknowledge this.

Beautiful parks are laid in Baku, buildings are built and restored, roads are laid and a new infrastructure is created. Baku has really turned into a beautiful city. We need to work so that the Baku suburbs are distinguished for their modernity, beauty and cleanness. There is every opportunity to do this. There is already a specific program which will help to solve the issues you raised. It should cover redevelopment in all settlements.

Road is comfort and landscaping. Painting and restoration of buildings, building fences and planting trees mean improvement. Several million trees were planted last year alone. That means health.

RESIDENT: Distinguished President, let me greet you in Mardakan and convey the gratitude of residents of our settlement for your visit.

Mr. President, you have ruled Azerbaijan for already eight years. During these years you have done much for the republic and Azerbaijani people. Today, the Azerbaijani people live peacefully and safely. This is the result of your policy. Thanks to your policies, the ongoing terrible events in the world have not affected us and, we believe, it will not. This is your policy. Of course, a man who has learnt from our great leader is able to carry out this policy. You pursue the correct, accurate and balanced policy among major countries of the world, famous politicians. We sincerely welcome this. Thank you for working in the name of a prosperous life for the Azerbaijani people with the entire family.

The work done by Mehriban khanim is also evident. Azerbaijani women are known abroad in the face of Mehriban khanim.

Mr. President, as I noted, it is impossible to name all the work done. The redevelopment program of suburban villages drafted upon your decree was discussed with us and submitted to the Presidential Administration.

This is a result of your successful policies, good deeds done in the name of Azerbaijani people and motherland.

However, much needs to be done yet. The school, before which we stand today, was built by the late Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev in its time.

We've studied in this old school building. This building was built later. An old building needs to be restored. We do not want to lose it. Mardakan population knows this school as Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev School. It does not meet today's requirements. True, it I being used today, but it is not for today. This was built at the beginning of the century.

Mr. President, you will still do much for the motherland. We wish you good health, unwavering commitment and inexhaustible strength. God bless you.

President Ilham Aliyev: Thank you very much. I am very grateful to you. I will continue to strive to serve my own people. We have to solve all the problems facing the country. As for this school, of course, it will be repaired.

Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiev did a lot for the people of Azerbaijan. We revere his memory. I really appreciate what he has done. Personalities like him represented the people of Azerbaijan at the proper level at the time. Of course, he was a wealthy man and achieved great financial opportunities on his own. But he used these opportunities to improve the lives of his people. He wanted the Azerbaijani youth to study, to be literate and educated. He wanted social issues have to be resolved in Azerbaijan. Through his funds, he laid major water supply system, built schools and sent orphans, poor children abroad to receive higher education. We must be respectful to cultural, spiritual and material heritage of such an outstanding person.

We have renovated his home in Baku for this very purpose. Now it also houses the Museum of History of Azerbaijan. But at the same time, we have restored it as the house of Haji Zeynalabdin. At one time, we improved also his grave here in Mardakan.

Pir Hasan sanctuary was upgraded a few years ago at our initiative. Once again, I want to say that he is one of the most prominent figures in Azerbaijan?s history. His charitable mission served the development of Azerbaijani people. I often meet with modern entrepreneurs. They are also supported by the state. I want the entrepreneurship to develop so that people will become richer. Every time I advise them to pay attention to issues of social responsibility. Wealthy, rich people should extend a helping hand to those who have no opportunities. This will be a good deed before Allah and his own conscience.

This school is sure to be repaired. The appropriate order will be signed and we'll create a beautiful memorial to him. Now I was told about the problems that have arisen in connection with the construction of this school. They will be eliminated if there any deficiencies.1 news.az

Could new treaty get van der Sloot back to Holland? - CBS42

This full rss is powered by Adsense IdBirmingham, Ala (WIAT) What will a new extradition treaty between Peru and The Netherlands mean for the Holloway family's six year quest to find out what happened to Natalee Holloway on a graduation trip to Aruba?

Will it complicate efforts to extradite Joran van der Sloot from Peru's Castro Castro prison to face wire fraud and extortion charges here in Birmingham?

Peru and The Netherlands agreed on an extradition treaty Thursday. It still requires ratification by the Dutch Parliament and the Peruvian Congress.

Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal and his Peruvian opposite number Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde signed a treaty on the transfer of sentenced persons and the enforcement of criminal judgments. "The treaty allows residents of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have been sentenced to prison by final and irrevocable judgment in Peru" to serve their sentence in the Netherlands, said Rosenthal.

The Dutch government says there are 117 Dutch citizens in prison in Peru, 113 on drug charges. And then there's Joran van der Sloot.

Van der Sloot's Peruvian lawyer, Max Altez, says how the proposed treaty affects his client depends on the length of sentence van der Sloot gets in his pending murder trial.

He's awaiting trial on charges he murdered a Peruvian college student he met at a poker tournament. Peruvian investigators say van der Sloot confessed he killed Stephany Flores after she found material relating to Natalee Holloway on his laptop. Flores body was found in van der Sloot's Lima hotel room five years to the day of Natalee's disappearance.

Altez said he would advise Van der Sloot to apply for extradition if he's convicted "under the violent emotion defense" -- meaning a jury could determine he snapped and killed Flores, but didn't plan it out. In that case, he'd likely get a three-to-five year sentence, which he wouldn't appeal, Altez said.

"If he gets a higher sentence" -- such as what amounts to premeditated murder -- "we will probably appeal" and not request extradition, said Altez. That's because once Van der Sloot leaves Peru to serve his time in the Netherlands, it would be more difficult to appeal his sentence.

Natalee vanished on a trip to Aruba in 2005 with other Mountain Brook High School grads. She was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot and two of his friends. Although he's still considered the prime suspect in the case, he was questioned but never charged by Aruban police.

A federal grand jury here in Alabama has indicted van der Sloot on wire fraud and extortion charges claiming he falsely promised to tell the Holloway family about Natalee's fate in exchange for money. The feds say van der Sloot took the money but delivered no information.

Box Office: Can Apatow's 'Bridesmaids' Crack $20M? - TheWrap

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

By Daniel Frankel

Hey, they said the original "Hangover" was supposed to open to only around $20 million, and look what it did...

Yes, it's not always easy to predict the box-office performance of R-rated comedies, let alone R-rated comedies targeted to a female audience, a pretty rare cinematic bird.

For its part, Universal is conservatively projecting an opening in the low teens for its Judd Apatow-produced "Bridesmaids," a $32.5 million comedy featuring an ensemble cast that includes "Saturday Night Live's" Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne and "The Office's" Ellie Kemper.

Starting out in 2,917 locations -- alongside one other major-studio wide release, Sony's 3D-converted action-horror film "Priest" -- "Bridesmaids" is widely predicted by box-office watchers outside its studio to do about $16 million-$18 million, with its tracking generally regarded as soft.

Still, there are several reasons to suggest that the Paul Feig-directed movie might outperform its dour pre-release forecast.

For one, the tracking for the movie's target demo, females under 25, is fairly strong, with 89 percent of young women polled reporting awareness of the film and a solid 20 percent registering "unaided awareness," meaning they found out about it independent of promotion.

Further, according to tracking firm NRG, 36 percent of young women report having "definite interest" in seeing the film.

The movie's "first-choice" co-efficient among those same younger females isn't so strong -- only around 10 percent -- but that might be explained by the impending arrival of big-ticket tentpoles including the next "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie.

Further, the tracking data suggests "Bridesmaids" might draw a fairly broad audience, with older women reporting even stronger response, and even 14 percent of young men signaling "definite interest," according to NRG.

OK, so that's a lot of tracking mumbo-jumbo ... but why shouldn't this movie with fairly broad appeal and great reviews (90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes as of Thursday afternoon) defy the gravity of pre-release expectations and excede, say, $20 million for the weekend?

"This is an out-of-the-box comedy -- there are no comps for this," noted Nikki Rocco, president of domestic distribution for Universal, which co-produced "Bridesmaids" with Relativity. "You could say 'Sex and the City' is comparable, but that was on television for seven years and was already a known commodity. We're in uncharted waters here."

Certainly, producer Apatow is no stranger of such undiscovered box-office realms, having released quirky comedies several years ago, "Knocked Up" and "Superbad," that outperformed opening expectations.

Of course, Apatow's more recent eclectic efforts, most notably the Adam Sandler dramedy "Funny People" two years ago for Universal, have missed the mark wildly, further complicating the forecast for "Bridesmaids."

With Marvel/Paramount's "Thor" expected to once again lead the domestic box office after opening to just over $65 million last weekend, Sony will release the Sam Raimi/Michael DeLuca-produced "Priest" into 2,864 U.S. and Canadian locations.

The film is commanding soft reviews -- 21 percent, according to Rotten Tomatoes -- and tracking isn't all that great, with the strongest group of survey responders, men 25 and older, registering only 73 percent total awareness, according to NRG.

Kate McCann and the ferocity of maternal love - Telegraph.co.uk

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

When the calamitously useless Portuguese police declared the two doctors arguido ? suspects ? British reporters should have rallied round and dug up the fact there had been five previous incidents of paedophiles on the Algarve climbing into bed with holidaying children. They could have pointed out there wasn?t a shred of evidence to implicate the heartbroken couple. But the witch-hunt was in full spate.

Kate McCann?s ?crime? ? a lapse for which she would receive a life sentence ? was to have left her children sleeping while having dinner 100 metres away, returning to their apartment every half-hour. According to vitriolic online comments, she was a selfish bitch who had it coming.

Is it that human beings come to hate what we fear most? The McCanns were just like us, holidaying like us, doing their best for their kids like us, jumping into the freezing swimming pool with Madeleine the minute they arrived at the hotel because she couldn?t wait to get in. Just like us. But the family found themselves in a horror film with no final credits to release them from the dark, and it was too much to bear. So they had to be demonised, so we could be distanced from the pain. There, there, don?t worry; see, they?re really not like us at all.

I must admit I approached the book, Madeleine, with a heavy sense of duty. I needn?t have worried. Kate has done her daughter proud. This remarkable woman has experienced her own personal Calvary ? she has both suffered and been despised in her suffering ? yet she has found the strength to write down the truth so that her children will have ?a complete record of what happened so that, when they are ready, the facts will be there for them to read?.

When the Portuguese detective was pressing Kate to confess to her daughter?s murder and offering her a ?light? two-year sentence, all she could think was that if she and Gerry were charged, they would stop searching for Madeleine. The book is an attempt to keep that search going for as long as it takes.

I am sure the parents of Milly Dowler, the bright 13-year-old girl who, like Madeleine, was ?kidnapped in the blink of an eye?, will find much to empathise with in these pages. Kate is particularly good on how a mother and father grieve differently. She admits she sometimes resented Gerry for being able to get on with his work while she was still transfixed by the idea of Madeleine?s fear and pain. ?The thought of paedophiles makes me want to rip my skin off.?

Unlike the McCanns, Robert and Sally Dowler had their daughter?s body returned to them. This week, Levi Bellfield is on trial for Milly?s murder. Madeleine?s kidnapper is still out there so her parents can go on hoping, which is both a blessing and a curse.

?I cannot, and will not, allow this evil person to destroy anything else in our life,? writes Kate McCann. She has fought to recover her faith and now believes that, wherever Madeleine is, she is with God. If her mind ?ever starts to wander down dark alleys?, she focuses on her husband ?and the three beautiful children we have created together?.

One of those children will not be there for her birthday today, but her mother will never give up on her. This testament to the ferocity of maternal love tells us so.

- Who says that foreign languages are declining in this country? On Tuesday night, the Small Boy was getting help from his father with his French revision. What does ?au bord de la mer? mean?, he was asked. ?My mum is boring,? replied our home-grown linguist without hesitation.

Schoolchildren have always delighted in daft translations of foreign phrases. I remember how a Simon in my O-level class surprised the examiner with the news that ?coup de grace? means ?to mow the lawn?. Then there?s ?Honi soit qui mal y pense?, which means, ?Honestly, I think I?m going to be sick.? My absolute favourite has to be ?In loco parentis? or ?my father is an engine driver?. Obviously.

Some things have most definitely changed during the examination season, in whose feverish grip our poor household finds itself. Children used to get nervous about exams and do revision. Now

the parents do. For reasons I find hard to explain, I am speedreading Much Ado About Nothing. My daughter yawns ostentatiously at my exertions as I reel off another thrilling fact about the Liberal welfare reforms 1906 to 1914 for her history GCSE.

I know that I am not alone. ?I?ve already done exams once,? moans a fellow mother. ?Why do I have to do the damn things again??

We agree that our parents could barely have told you what subjects we were doing, let alone become director of studies for their little darlings. Apart from the annual visit to parents? evening, education was a matter for schools and children. No longer.

Parents of Britain, console yourselves. Even the most brilliant exam results will fade away in the end. Sic transit gloria mundi. Or, as we used to say, Gloria was sick in the minibus on Monday.

- What is there left to say about Alan Sugar, a businessman so visionary he told an interviewer in 2004: ?Next Christmas, the iPod will be dead, finished, gone, kaput?? Honestly, that is the kind of foresight that put the great into Britain.

Lord Sugar is back this week in the BBC?s best comedy show. The Apprentice has taken the place of Big Brother as the nation?s favourite panto. The first laugh comes from the voiceover announcing that we are about to meet ?Britain?s entrepreneurial elite? as another bunch of fame-seeking egomaniacs and clich-spouting clots appears. As Shakespeare and Molire knew, there is no one funnier than the person who has no grasp of how deluded he or she is.

The joy of The Apprentice is the cast may change every year, but the characters remain the same. There is always a wideboy braggart who couldn?t run the proverbial whelk stall, but endears himself to the Boss by reminding him of his youthful striving self. And there is invariably a female so ambitious she would sell her own young toasted in a panini, which suits Lord Sugar, who has rather old-fashioned views on maternity leave.

?I seek out pain rather than pleasure,? boasted Edna, who believes people with weak handshakes should be sent to Guantanamo Bay or similar. Edna, however, is a mere pussycat compared to Melody, who fled war-torn Iran after she raised her scary eyebrows and destroyed a town. ?I was once trained by Al Gore and taught by Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama,? explained Melody.

After the boys? team had elected to sell orange juice, the entrepreneurial elite paid a visit to a fruit market. ?Is that an orange?? asked one Alpha Male. ?I dunno,? said his team leader shrewdly.

?I?m not Sir Alan, the Patron Saint of Bloody Losers,? growled the Boss. Altogether now: ?OH YES YOU ARE!?

Chrome Now Has 160 Million Users ? and Angry Birds - GigaOm

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

Google?s Chrome web browser now counts 160 million users in 41 nations, the companyannounced during day two of Google I/O conference at San Francisco?s Moscone Center. That?s more than double the 70 million users of the web browser Google reported at last year?s conference.

First released in beta to Microsoft XP users in September 2008, the Chrome browserhas averaged one update every six weeks over the last year, said SVP of Chrome, Sundar Pichai.

Before getting into the big news (Chromebooks), Google announced new Chrome API features for developers, including speech support capabilities. For users, the added speech recognition features will enhance programs like Google Translate. Users can now speak into the browser, and Chrome will translate their phrase into a selected language.

Speed was another big talking point for the morning. ?Speed is the fundamental underpinning behind Chrome,? Pichai told the crowd. The company announced upgrades that will result in a 10-times performance increase for developers writing web programs.?But wait, there?s more,? Taylor said, announcing a 3-D feature for the Web GL platform.

Then a little birdy flew in to the conference center and stole the spotlight. The biggest news of the day went to Angry Birds, which announced it was finally coming to the web. And while users can access Angry Birds on any browser (even Internet Explorer), the company has created special levels ? otherwise known as ?Chrome realm? ? for Chrome browser users.

Angry Birds for the Web will also be cached for offline use. So when your mobile goes dead and you?re on an airplane, you can still be launching birds at green pigs.

BY EXERCISING ANY RIGHTS TO THE WORK PROVIDED HERE, YOU ACCEPT AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THIS LICENSE. TO THE EXTENT THIS LICENSE MAY BE CONSIDERED TO BE A CONTRACT, THE LICENSOR GRANTS YOU THE RIGHTS CONTAINED HERE IN CONSIDERATION OF YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF SUCH TERMS AND CONDITIONS.

1. Definitions

"Collective Work" means a work, such as a periodical issue, anthology or encyclopedia, in which the Work in its entirety in unmodified form, along with one or more other contributions, constituting separate and independent works in themselves, are assembled into a collective whole. A work that constitutes a Collective Work will not be considered a Derivative Work (as defined below) for the purposes of this License. "Derivative Work" means a work based upon the Work or upon the Work and other pre-existing works, such as a translation, musical arrangement, dramatization, fictionalization, motion picture version, sound recording, art reproduction, abridgment, condensation, or any other form in which the Work may be recast, transformed, or adapted, except that a work that constitutes a Collective Work will not be considered a Derivative Work for the purpose of this License. For the avoidance of doubt, where the Work is a musical composition or sound recording, the synchronization of the Work in timed-relation with a moving image ("synching") will be considered a Derivative Work for the purpose of this License. "Licensor" means the individual, individuals, entity or entities that offers the Work under the terms of this License. "Original Author" means the individual, individuals, entity or entities who created the Work. "Work" means the copyrightable work of authorship offered under the terms of this License. "You" means an individual or entity exercising rights under this License who has not previously violated the terms of this License with respect to the Work, or who has received express permission from the Licensor to exercise rights under this License despite a previous violation.

2. Fair Use Rights. Nothing in this license is intended to reduce, limit, or restrict any rights arising from fair use, first sale or other limitations on the exclusive rights of the copyright owner under copyright law or other applicable laws.

3. License Grant. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, Licensor hereby grants You a worldwide, non-exclusive, revocable (for the duration of the applicable copyright) license to exercise the rights in the Work as stated below:

to reproduce the Work, to incorporate the Work into one or more Collective Works;

The above rights may be exercised on freely and openly accessible web media formats . The above rights include the right to make such modifications as are technically necessary to exercise the rights in other media and formats, but otherwise you have no rights to make any alterations or Derivative Works. All rights not expressly granted by Licensor are hereby reserved, including but not limited to the rights set forth in Sections 4(d) and 4(e).

4. Restrictions. The license granted in Section 3 above is expressly made subject to and limited by the following restrictions:

You may publicly display the Work only under the terms of this License, and You must include a copy of, or the Uniform Resource Identifier for, this License with every copy of the Work You publicly display. You may not offer or impose any terms on the Work that restrict the terms of this License or the ability of a recipient of the Work to exercise the rights granted to that recipient under the terms of the License. You may not sublicense the Work. You must keep intact all notices that refer to this License and to the disclaimer of warranties. When You publicly display the Work, You may not impose any technological measures on the Work that restrict the ability of a recipient of the Work from You to exercise the rights granted to that recipient under the terms of the License. This Section 4(a) applies to the Work as incorporated in a Collective Work, but this does not require the Collective Work apart from the Work itself to be made subject to the terms of this License. If You create a Collective Work, upon notice from any Licensor You must, to the extent practicable, remove from the Collective Work any credit as required by Section 4(c), as demanded. You may not exercise any of the rights granted to You in Section 3 above in any manner that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation. The exchange of the Work for other copyrighted works by means of digital file-sharing or otherwise shall not be considered to be intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation, provided there is no payment of any monetary compensation in connection with the exchange of copyrighted works. If You publicly display the Work (as defined in Section 1 above) or Collective Works (as defined in Section 1 above), You must, unless a request has been made pursuant to Section 4(a), keep intact all copyright notices for the Work and provide, reasonable to the medium or means You are utilizing: (i) the name of the Original Author (or pseudonym, if applicable) if supplied, and/or (ii) if the Original Author and/or Licensor designate another party or parties (e.g. a sponsor institute, publishing entity, journal) for attribution ("Attribution Parties") in Licensor's copyright notice, terms of service or by other reasonable means, the name of such party or parties; the title of the Work if supplied; to the extent reasonably practicable, the Uniform Resource Identifier, if any, that Licensor specifies to be associated with the Work, unless such URI does not refer to the copyright notice or licensing information for the Work. The credit required by this Section 4(c) may be implemented in any reasonable manner; provided, however, that in the case of a Collective Work, at a minimum such credit will appear, if a credit for all contributing authors of the Collective Work appears, then as part of these credits and in a manner at least as prominent as the credits for the other contributing authors. For the avoidance of doubt, You may only use the credit required by this clause for the purpose of attribution in the manner set out above and, by exercising Your rights under this License, You may not implicitly or explicitly assert or imply any connection with, sponsorship or endorsement by the Original Author, Licensor and/or Attribution Parties, as appropriate, of You or Your use of the Work, without the separate, express prior written permission of the Original Author, Licensor and/or Attribution Parties.

5. Representations, Warranties and Disclaimer

UNLESS OTHERWISE MUTUALLY AGREED TO BY THE PARTIES IN WRITING, LICENSOR OFFERS THE WORK AS-IS AND ONLY TO THE EXTENT OF ANY RIGHTS HELD IN THE LICENSED WORK BY THE LICENSOR. THE LICENSOR MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND CONCERNING THE WORK, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY OR OTHERWISE, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, WARRANTIES OF TITLE, MARKETABILITY, MERCHANTIBILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NONINFRINGEMENT, OR THE ABSENCE OF LATENT OR OTHER DEFECTS, ACCURACY, OR THE PRESENCE OF ABSENCE OF ERRORS, WHETHER OR NOT DISCOVERABLE. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, SO SUCH EXCLUSION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

6. Limitation on Liability.

EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL LICENSOR BE LIABLE TO YOU ON ANY LEGAL THEORY FOR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THIS LICENSE OR THE USE OF THE WORK, EVEN IF LICENSOR HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

7. Termination

This License and the rights granted hereunder will terminate automatically upon any breach by You of the terms of this License. Individuals or entities who have received Collective Works (as defined in Section 1 above) from You under this License, however, will not have their licenses terminated provided such individuals or entities remain in full compliance with those licenses. Sections 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, and 8 will survive any termination of this License. Subject to the above terms and conditions, the license granted here is perpetual (for the duration of the applicable copyright in the Work). Notwithstanding the above, Licensor reserves the right to release the Work under different license terms or to stop distributing the Work at any time; provided, however that any such election will not serve to withdraw this License (or any other license that has been, or is required to be, granted under the terms of this License), and this License will continue in full force and effect unless terminated as stated above.

8. Miscellaneous

Each time You distribute or publicly digitally perform the Work (as defined in Section 1 above) or a Collective Work (as defined in Section 1 above), the Licensor offers to the recipient a license to the Work on the same terms and conditions as the license granted to You under this License. If any provision of this License is invalid or unenforceable under applicable law, it shall not affect the validity or enforceability of the remainder of the terms of this License, and without further action by the parties to this agreement, such provision shall be reformed to the minimum extent necessary to make such provision valid and enforceable. Kentucky Copes with Cicadas Through Unusual Food Choices - Associated Content

This full rss is powered by Adsense IdCOMMENTARY | From living in the forests and fields of western Kentucky throughout the past 30 years, I have grown to know the cycle of cicadas and the food culture that comes with it. Presently, I am visiting for the

Kentucky Derby. As the festival ends, Louisville, Ky., is settling in for the summer warm up. Soon, the return of the Brood XIX cicadas will find Kentuckians with their forks ready. Out on the Ohio River, there are only the sounds of birds tweeting at night. However, in my native western Kentucky just two hours away, iSurfMuhlenberg reports cicada activity in the county has already ignited.

With forks in hand, Kentucky foodies are ready to crunch down on the nasty, ugly, and unusual cicadas. However, is it worth it to fly into the Louisville airport to taste the 13-year mating spree of the cicadas? Although these bugs are totally disgusting to look at and definitely manage to find their way into your hair, Kentuckians have learned that at least one of your family members will truly enjoy this bug treat.

Eating cicadas is not something shocking in a place like Kentucky. In the cuisine world, Kentucky is well known as a place where recipe innovation is alive and well. Eating squirrel brains for breakfast or filling burgoo with mystery meats is a sustainable and ecological tradition for locals. A state that is well known for being ahead of its time in the conservation movement, most Kentucky hunters believe that you should eat what you accidentally kill whether it is with your car or gun.

In fact, locals become so accustomed to eating anything that is free that this soon turns into a food tasting challenge. Kentucky sensibilities proclaim that if a food item seems like something you should not be eating, then is probably worth your time to at least try it. Good examples of foodies gone wrong are the new vendor items at the Kentucky State Fair each year. Last year, the 2010 temptation was a Krispie Kreme Cheese Burger, reports the Courier Journal.

Five spectacular overwater hut resorts - CNN International

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Overwater bungalows are iconic, thatch-roofed symbols of a tropical paradise There are more than 90 overwater hut resorts, but most are in the Maldives "For everyone, they've come to typify romance," travel agent says

(CNN) -- The room service arrived in a canoe and exotic fish frolicked just beneath the floor when Gary Leff spent his honeymoon in Bora Bora.

Life is good when you're in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and even better when you're staying in an overwater bungalow -- that iconic, stilted, thatch-roofed symbol of a tropical paradise.

"It's unique because there's a million beachfront resorts in the world ... but it's much less common to have your room actually be [over] the water," Leff said.

"There's something neat to the story about climbing off your deck into the water, snorkeling right off your deck."

You'll probably have to travel far and open your wallet wide to stay at one of these exotic villas.

There are more than 90 overwater bungalow resorts in the world, but about two-thirds of them are in the Maldives, according to OverwaterBungalows.net, a website that tracks the properties.

The Caribbean has a few such resorts, but it doesn't really lend itself to overwater construction because of hurricanes, said Terry McCabe, national director of leisure for Altour.

Many overwater bungalows, like this one in Cayo Espanto, Belize, feature glass panes in the floor.

The peaceful, shallow lagoons of French Polynesia and the Maldives, on the other hand, offer more hospitable surroundings.

Most overwater bungalows come with "Tahitian television," or glass panes built into the floor through which you can observe the sea life below, McCabe said.

"For everyone, they've come to typify romance, the allure of the South Pacific," McCabe said.

Here are five overwater bungalow resorts to remember.

Bora Bora Nui Resort & Spa, Bora Bora

The resort, on Motu Toopua in the lagoon of Bora Bora, has dozens of overwater bungalows, including the only two-story overwater villas in French Polynesia, said Kleon Howe of The Art of Travel in San Diego, an agency that specializes in the region.

Leff, who honeymooned here in 2005, said he enjoyed the privacy the huts provided.

"It's almost like you're alone in the world," he said. "Even when the resort had plenty of people there, you rarely saw people because they stayed in their bungalows."

The resort is also one of the best values for redeeming Hilton HHonors points, said Leff, who shares strategies for making the most of traveler loyalty programs on his website, View From the Wing.

Need another reason to go? Bora Bora Nui was among the winners of TripAdvisor's 2011 Travelers' Choice awards -- chosen by the site's members as one of the top 10 hotels for romance in the South Pacific.

A king overwater deluxe villa goes for about $1,170 a night during the summer with an advance purchase .

Te Tiare Beach Resort, Huahine

About 30 minutes by plane from Tahiti, the two islands of Huahine -- billed as "one of Polynesia's best-kept secrets" by Tahiti Tourism -- are home to archaeological sites, vanilla plantations and mango, banana and papaya groves.

You'll also find the Te Tiare Beach Resort, where visitors can stay in various types of huts, including deep overwater bungalows.

"There are only 11 of these, and all have stunning views of the lagoon and reef," Howe said. "The resort is only accessible by water, which lends a remote and very romantic feel."

All of the bungalows face west, so expect to end your days with spectacular sunsets.

The deep overwater bungalows go for about $830 a night during high season (from June to October) and about $720 for the rest of the year.

Constance Moofushi Resort, Maldives

Choose from dozens of water villas on the spectacular South Ari Atoll, which is home to a number of world-class dive sites.

You'll reach the resort by seaplane after arriving in Maldives International Airport and relax in bungalows with gorgeous views of the Indian Ocean.

There's lots to do if you want to leave your hut, including scuba diving, snorkeling, night fishing and other activities.

For an extra fee, the resort also offers a "Robinson Crusoe" experience for couples, allowing them to spend a half-day or a full day on a deserted island.

Four Seasons Bora Bora

The resort's 100 overwater bungalows sit on stilts over a turquoise lagoon and feature traditional teak wood furnishings and roofs thatched with pandanus leaves.

You can choose various views, but Howe recommended splurging for the Otemanu-view overwater bungalow with a private plunge pool.

"These are right out at the end of the pontoon and have great views of the main peak of [Mount] Otemanu on the main island of Bora Bora," Howe said.

This type of bungalow goes for about $2,700 a night.

The Four Seasons Bora Bora was among the winners of TripAdvisor's 2011 Travelers' Choice awards -- chosen by the site's members as one of the top 10 hotels for romance and luxury in the South Pacific.

Cayo Espanto, Belize

As mentioned, you won't find a lot of overwater bungalows near the United States, but this five-star resort on a private island in the Western Caribbean is one option closer to home: It's less than two hours by plane from Miami and Houston.

"That's a lovely property," McCabe said. "It's a very private, very upscale resort."

There are seven villas on the island, including one overwater bungalow. You'll find the one-bedroom Casa Ventanas at the end of a dock that stretches more than 150 feet off the island "for the ultimate in privacy," the resort says.

Like many of its counterparts in French Polynesia and the Maldives, the bungalow has a glass panel in the floor so guests can gaze down at the sea life during their stay.

Casa Ventanas is yours for $1,295 per night, which includes meals, drinks and personal butler service. (Prices rise for the holiday season.)

Android 3.1, Ice Cream Sandwich Take Center Stage at Google I/O - eWeek

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

SAN FRANCISCO?Google May 10 introduced a new version of Android 3.1 "Honeycomb," an incremental upgrade of its tablet-optimized operating system, at its Google I/O developers' conference here.

The upgrade, rolling out today to owners of the Motorola Xoom on Verizon's 3G network, improves upon Honeycomb's intensive customization capabilities with homescreen widgets that developers can create to resize horizontally, vertically or both.

Honeycomb 3.1 features a couple new APIs, including the USB host API and Open Accessory API.

For Honeycomb devices that support USB host mode, applications can now manage USB peripherals such as audio devices, input devices and other communications devices, such as VOIP headsets. Honeycomb 3.1 will also support mice, trackballs, joysticks, gamepads and others.

With a mind to expand Android's purview beyond smartphones, tablets and TVs, the Open Accessory API allows Android applications to integrate and work with musical equipment, exercise equipment and robotics systems.

Honeycomb 3.1 will also support the forthcoming Google TV upgrade later this year.

Android engineer Mike Cleron said Sony, Samsung, Logitech and Vizio are building new Google TV products this year.

Google's Android team backported this API to Android 2.3.4 as an optional library, with the Samsung Nexus S as the first device to support this feature. The 2.3.4 version of the Open Accessory API is available in the new Google APIs add-on for developers.

Meanwhile, Cleron said Google's next Android smartphone platform, code-named Ice Cream Sandwich, will include Honeycomb features. This will include the holographic user interface, jazzier multitasking, the new launcher and richer widgets.

Google's goal here is to curb some of the fragmentation the company introduced when it rolled out Honeycomb as a break from its Android 2.x smartphone builds.

Further along this defragmentation front, Google also said that several carriers and phone makers will create guidelines for how quickly devices are updated after a new platform release, and for how long they will continue to be updated.

This means participating partners will receive the latest Android platform upgrades for 18 months after the device is first released, provided the hardware can support the OS builds.

Participants in this as-yet-unnamed group include Verizon, HTC, Samsung, Sprint, Sony Ericsson, LG, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Motorola and AT&T, though Google said participation is open.

Google also trotted out some meaty Android stats.

Hugo Barra, vice president of Android product management, said the platform has seen 100 million activated Android devices, with 400,000 new Android devices activated each day.

There are also now 200,000 free and paid applications available in Android Market, with users installing 4.5 billion apps.

Return to Red Wings' lineup still riles nevers for future Hall of Famer Mike ... - The Ann Arbor News - MLive.com

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id DETROIT -- And even after 21 NHL seasons and nearly 1,500 games, Detroit Red Wings forward Mike Modano was tossing and turning Monday night, thinking about his next game, which could always be his final game.

Coach Mike Babcock called Modano the night before to tell him he was playing in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday against the San Jose Sharks.

"It was tough last night sleeping, knowing that I was playing and there was no mystery about it," Modano said. "It wasn?t coming here and waiting and seeing after warmup or whatever. In some sense, that?s good. In some sense, that?s bad.

"I mean, you get kind of restless sleep, but then again you have time to really think about what you want to do and what?s expected of you."

Johan Franzen was scratched because of a sore left ankle that has hampered him since Game 2 of the first round against Phoenix.

"This time of the year, for Mule to do what he did, it?s pretty honorable," Modano said. "Everybody?s trying to suck it up for your teammates to win and eventually move on from series to series. He did what he could, he played hard, but I?m just excited to get an opportunity."

Modano played 9:01 in his team?s 3-1 victory. He started the game on a line with Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom. He took some of the faceoffs for Datsyuk, who has been bothered by a sore wrist, and won 6-of-9 draws. He also played on the point on the second power-play unit.

Modano?s only other postseason appearance was in Game 4 against the Coyotes.

"It?s all you look forward to all season long, to be involved in some sense and be on the ice with these guys and competing -- knowing they?re going through some physical and mental abuse out there and to kind of help lighten that load."

Modano?s teammates said it?s a nice luxury having a player of his experience waiting in the wings.

"He played real well in Game 4 (vs. Phoenix)," captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. "I thought he skated real well and I expect him to do the same thing for us again."

Said Danny Cleary: "It?s not an easy situation to deal with, considering his career. He?s a Hall of Fame player, one last shot and hasn?t been able to get in kind of his groove.

"He?s got good hockey in him. He?s a good player, passes, shoots well."Sharks missing leading scorerForward Ryane Clowe, the Sharks? leading playoff scorer, didn?t make the trip because of an upper-body injury.

Sharks coach Todd McLellan said the injury wasn?t caused by the big open-ice hit Niklas Kronwall delivered on Clowe during the second period of Game 5.

"It had nothing to do with the hit that Kronwall laid on him," McLellan said. "He finished the game. We think with this injury, he?ll be able to play as we move forward. But we have to wait and see when we get back."

After jumping Justin Abdelkader during a faceoff at the end of Game 4, Clowe said he wished Kronwall were lined up against him. He was upset about Kronwall?s hit on Dany Heatley in Game 3.

"Obviously, you don?t want him to be too badly hurt," Kronwall said. "I don?t think it has anything to do with that hit whatsoever.

"He?s an honest player, works hard, plays hard. He?s a good player."

Clowe is a physical catalyst and emotional leader for San Jose. He had five assists in the first five games of this series and four goals and 13 points in 11 playoff games.

"Very much like Franzen, a big guy who takes up a lot of space, but he?s got great hands," Modano said. "He?s been very effective at both ends of the ice. That?s a big hole for them. But when good teams lose good guys, they seem to find a way to rally around it."

The Sharks weren?t downplaying Clowe?s absence.

"You can?t replace your top point-getter in the playoffs," Logan Couture said. "Clowie?s been great all year and in the playoffs, too."

Said Joe Pavelski: "He?s a big part of our team, he?s done a lot for us throughout this postseason, so obviously you miss a body like that. Throughout the playoffs, you know there?s going to be an injury or two along the way. There?s no excuses for us."Hudler replaces Draper in lineupJiri Hudler returned to the lineup for Game 6, replacing Kris Draper. Hudler had no points and no shots on goal in 10:22.

Hudler was scratched in Game 5 after being held without a point in the first four games. Draper had played the past three games. Draper?s line, with Darren Helm and Patrick Eaves, provided a spark and accounted for a pair of goals.

"Whatever the team needs to win, everybody is OK with it," Hudler said before the game. "This is playoff hockey. There is not time to be frustrated or shocked or things like that. You?ve just got to go with it and be prepared to jump in whenever Babs need you in the lineup."?

Sean Avery: Will Avery's PSA Help End Homophobia in Sports? - Bleacher Report

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

Sean Avery has always been a lightning rod for controversy, ever since he first broke into the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings back in 2001. He's never been one to keep from running his mouth about something he feels, and naturally, it's tended to get him in trouble.

So, when Avery appeared in a public service announcement speaking out in favor of gay marriage in the state of New York, it must have been surprising for the Rangers wing to see himself praised by many members of GLBT rights organizations.

On top of that, by releasing this public service announcement, in which Avery says he feels everyone should have the right to marry, the motor-mouthed wing has re-opened a touchy subject in the sports world: homophobia in sports.

Can Avery's PSA help put an end to the discrimination and hate that still lurks in locker rooms around the country?

It's the dirty little secret that's not really a secret anymore: homophobia is still very much a part of sports. Why do you think there has never been an openly gay active player in any of the four major sports in the United States (hint: it's not because there are no gay athletes)?

We've been down this road at least twice in the last couple of months prior to Avery; we saw it with Kobe Bryant muttering a homophobic slur at a referee earlier this season, and again with Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell's lewd and inappropriate comments and gestures directed at fans before Atlanta's game with the San Francisco Giants.

In both cases, we saw the men in question refer to homosexuality in a derogatory or insulting manner, which, given the history of sports, should come as little surprise.

After all, sports is about machoism, toughness, manliness (at least, among men's sports) and strength. Homosexuality has long been wrongly associated with femininity, weakness and inferiority. So, it stands to reason that using slurs that infer someone is inferior would be used almost constantly in locker rooms. To take that point even further, an athlete wouldn't fight for a cause full of weaklings, lest he be seen as one of them, right?

But, of course, Avery is different. A tough guy, a fighter, Avery is better known for being a brawler than a goal scorer at this point, breaking the mold of what many would picture as a GLBT ally. Yet, there he was, standing up for the rights of a community he's not a part of (the man has been linked to his fair share of blonde bombshells over the years?something tells me he's straight) because it's the right thing to do.

Avery isn't the only athlete to try to put an end to the hate in the sports world. Jared Dudley, Grant Hill and Brandon Ayenbadejo have all filmed similar PSAs in an effort to help put an end to the hate towards the GLBT community, standing up for marriage rights in their local areas.

I don't care what your political leanings are on the issue of gay marriage, homophobic slurs directed towards another person serve one purpose and one purpose only: to belittle and denigrate for no reason whatsoever. There's nothing political about putting an end to the use of homophobic slurs, it's just common decency not to treat other human beings with such disrespect.

I doubt that Avery's PSA, or the PSAs of Dudley, Hill and Ayenbadejo, will put an end to the homophobia we've seen from the sports world over the years. They won't single-handedly convince every athlete in the world not to use those slurs, and they won't erase the ingrained language of the locker room.

But, they do help. By standing up for gay rights, Avery's video makes progress, and it makes using the slurs just a bit more unacceptable. As time goes on, more athletes will join him in taking a stand on the issue.

Hateful slurs like these have no place in sports, and hopefully Avery's video can help to bring an eventual end to their use in the sports world.
